A sinus lift, also called sinus augmentation, is a bone grafting procedure used to increase bone height in the upper jaw for dental implant placement. When upper back teeth are lost, the maxillary sinus gradually expands downward into the space where bone once existed. This process, called sinus pneumatization, leaves insufficient bone volume for safe implant placement.

At A-Dental Center in North Hollywood, Dr. Fadi Elzayat, DDS, FICOI, performs advanced sinus lift procedures to help patients from North Hollywood, Burbank, Studio City, and the San Fernando Valley with upper jaw bone loss qualify for long-lasting dental implants. Every procedure is performed in-house. No referrals to outside oral surgeons. No separate facility fees.

Quick Answers

Most Common Questions, Answered Directly

Why is a sinus lift needed?

When upper back teeth are missing, the sinus expands into the space where bone used to be. A sinus lift adds bone to restore the height needed for safe implant placement. Without it, implants in the upper back jaw risk penetrating the sinus floor.

Is sinus lift surgery painful?

The procedure is performed under local anesthesia, so there is no pain during surgery. Sedation is available for anxious patients. Mild soreness and a minor nosebleed are common in the first 1 to 2 days. Most patients find recovery very manageable.

How long does healing take?

The graft integrates over 4 to 9 months. When existing bone allows simultaneous implant placement (crestal approach), overall treatment time is reduced significantly. Dr. Elzayat determines the timeline from your 3D imaging results.

Can implants be placed during the sinus lift?

Yes, when at least 5mm of bone exists. This is called simultaneous placement using the crestal approach. When bone is less than 5mm, a lateral sinus lift is performed first and implants are placed after the graft matures. Dr. Elzayat determines this from your 3D imaging.

Understanding the Procedure

Why Upper Jaw Bone Loss Requires a Sinus Lift

Upper back teeth have the longest roots in the mouth. When they are lost, a predictable chain of events unfolds inside the jaw that makes future implant placement more complex. Understanding this process explains why a sinus lift is not optional when it is recommended.

🦷

Step 1: Upper Back Teeth Are Lost

Upper back teeth (molars and premolars) have the longest roots of any teeth. These roots occupy significant vertical space within the jawbone, directly below the maxillary sinus. When these teeth are extracted or fall out, the bone that supported those roots begins to resorb.

⬇️

Step 2: Sinus Pneumatization Begins

As the bone resorbs, the maxillary sinus expands downward into the vacated space. This is called sinus pneumatization. It is a completely natural process, but the end result is a sinus floor that sits much closer to, or even into, the area where an implant would need to be placed.

📏

Step 3: Insufficient Bone Remains for an Implant

A dental implant requires a minimum of 8 to 10mm of bone height for stable, long-term integration. After sinus expansion, patients often have only 2 to 5mm available. Without augmentation, an implant cannot be safely placed. Bone grafting is needed to restore the missing volume.

⚠️

What happens if an implant is placed without a needed sinus lift

Placing an implant into insufficient bone in the upper back jaw risks penetrating the sinus membrane. This can cause chronic sinus pain, sinusitis, infection requiring surgical removal of the implant, and failed osseointegration. A sinus lift is not an upsell. When the bone is not there, the implant will not last.

A sinus lift solves this directly. By gently elevating the sinus membrane and packing bone graft material beneath it, Dr. Elzayat creates the bone volume needed for a stable implant. The result is a predictable foundation that allows upper jaw implants to succeed long-term at the same rate as implants in patients with naturally sufficient bone.

Types of Sinus Lifts

Lateral (Open) Sinus Lift Crestal (Closed/Internal) Sinus Lift
Approach Small window opened in side of upper jaw Access through implant site directly
When used Less than 5mm bone height 5mm or more bone height available
Bone volume added Larger volume — major augmentation Smaller volume — minor augmentation
Simultaneous implant Usually not — heal first Often yes — same-day placement possible
Recovery Moderate (7–10 days swelling) Minimal
Best for Severely deficient upper jaw Moderate bone deficiency

Procedure Steps

Step What Happens
1 — Consultation & 3D Imaging Cone Beam CT scan measures sinus dimensions and available bone height. Free consultation. Treatment plan created.
2 — Anesthesia & Sedation Local anesthesia administered. Sedation available for anxious patients or longer procedures.
3 — Lateral Window Creation Small opening created in the lateral wall of the sinus (lateral approach) or access made through implant site (crestal approach).
4 — Membrane Elevation Sinus membrane gently lifted upward, creating a pocket beneath the sinus floor.
5 — Graft Placement Bone graft material packed into the space. Membrane closes the window. Site sutured.
6 — Healing (4–9 Months) Graft integrates with native bone. Follow-up imaging confirms maturation.
7 — Implant Placement Once confirmed by imaging, dental implants are placed in the grafted area.

Healing Timeline

Timeframe What to Expect
Days 1-3 Swelling, soreness, possible light nosebleed. Soft diet. No blowing nose. Ice packs.
Days 4-7 Swelling improving. Most patients resume desk work. Sutures dissolve.
Weeks 2-4 Full recovery from surgery. Graft beginning to integrate.
Months 1-3 Graft maturing. Follow-up X-ray. Bone density increasing.
Months 4-9 Final imaging confirms bone maturity. Implant placement scheduled.

Sinus Lift vs No Sinus Lift Comparison

Situation Without Sinus Lift (when needed) With Sinus Lift
Upper jaw bone volume Insufficient — implant cannot be safely placed Restored to support implant
Implant options None in upper back jaw Full implant candidacy restored
Implant stability Risk of sinus penetration Stable long-term foundation
Bone trajectory Continues to shrink Preserved and augmented
Long-term outcome No implant possible or high failure risk Comparable to standard implants

What Our Patients Say

FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions

A sinus lift (sinus augmentation) is a surgical procedure that adds bone to the upper jaw in the area of the molars and premolars. It is performed when the maxillary sinus sits too close to the jawbone, leaving insufficient height for safe dental implant placement. The sinus membrane is gently lifted upward and bone graft material is placed underneath to increase bone volume.

Not always. A sinus lift is only needed when the sinus has expanded into the space where bone is required for implants. This commonly occurs after upper back teeth are lost for an extended period. Patients with adequate bone height can have upper jaw implants placed directly without augmentation. Dr. Elzayat determines necessity with Cone Beam 3D imaging.

Yes. Sinus lift surgery is a well-established procedure with a long track record of safety and success. Performed by an experienced implant specialist like Dr. Elzayat using precise 3D planning, the procedure is predictable and complication rates are low. Your medical history and sinus anatomy are thoroughly evaluated before any procedure is recommended.

The most common risk is perforation of the sinus membrane during elevation. If a small perforation occurs, it is repaired at the same appointment. Other risks include infection (treated with antibiotics), graft failure, and sinusitis. These complications are uncommon in experienced hands. Dr. Elzayat’s 26+ years of implant experience and advanced 3D planning minimize risk.

Yes. Placing an implant when insufficient bone exists significantly increases the risk of failure — the implant may penetrate the sinus floor causing pain, infection, and sinusitis. The implant may also lack the bone support needed to remain stable during osseointegration. A sinus lift before implant placement creates a stable, predictable foundation for long-term success.

Sinus lift cost varies based on whether it is a lateral or crestal approach, whether simultaneous implant placement is performed, the amount of bone graft material needed, and sedation chosen. Dr. Elzayat provides a complete written cost estimate at your free consultation. PPO insurance often covers a portion. CareCredit and Cherry financing available.

Yes. Swelling and mild bruising around the cheek and under the eye on the treated side are normal for 5-7 days. Apply ice packs 20 minutes on and 20 minutes off for the first 24 hours. Do not blow your nose for 2-4 weeks as this can dislodge the graft. Sneeze with your mouth open if needed. Worsening swelling after day 3 accompanied by fever may indicate infection — call us.

It is recommended to avoid flying for at least 2-4 weeks after a sinus lift. Changes in cabin pressure can displace the graft material before it has had time to stabilize. Dr. Elzayat will advise you on when it is safe to fly based on your specific procedure and healing progress.

Soft foods only for the first 2 weeks: yogurt, scrambled eggs, mashed potatoes, smoothies, soft fish. Avoid hard, crunchy, chewy, or spicy foods. No straws, no smoking, no alcohol. Most importantly: do not blow your nose or sneeze forcefully. A complete post-operative guide is provided at your appointment.

In lateral sinus lifts (the more extensive approach), implants are typically placed 4-9 months after the procedure to allow full graft integration. In crestal sinus lifts with good bone availability, implants may be placed simultaneously. The timeline is determined by your 3D imaging results and monitored at follow-up visits.

Graft failure can occur but is uncommon with experienced surgeons and proper patient compliance. Causes include membrane perforation that wasn’t repaired, infection, smoking, blowing the nose too soon, or inadequate bone contact. If a graft fails, it can often be retreated after full healing. Dr. Elzayat monitors healing closely to identify any concerns early.

Yes. Bone graft materials used in sinus lifts — including allograft (human donor bone) and xenograft (bovine bone) — undergo rigorous sterilization and processing to ensure safety. Synthetic grafts contain no biological material. All materials used at A-Dental Center are FDA-cleared and have established safety records in dental implant surgery.

For patients who need it to qualify for upper jaw implants, yes — absolutely. Without the procedure, implants cannot be safely placed in the upper back jaw. A sinus lift creates the bone foundation needed for long-lasting implants that improve chewing, aesthetics, and quality of life. Most patients who have the procedure find the outcome far exceeds the temporary inconvenience of recovery.

Smoking significantly impairs healing and increases risk of graft failure and infection. Patients who quit before the procedure and remain smoke-free during the 4-9 month healing period have substantially better outcomes. Dr. Elzayat will discuss the impact of smoking on your specific case and provide honest guidance during your free consultation.

No — sinus lift surgery at A-Dental Center is performed under local anesthesia with oral conscious sedation or nitrous oxide available for patient comfort. General anesthesia (IV sedation) is not routinely needed for this procedure. You remain conscious and can respond to instructions but are deeply relaxed and comfortable throughout.
