Seeing Inside the Bone with a 3D Cone CT Scan
What Is Cone Beam Computed Tomography?
Cone beam computed tomography (CBCT) produces detailed 3D images and cross-sectional views of targeted areas.
This advanced imaging is often used for dental implants, complex root canals, extractions, and identifying hidden sources of pain or infection.
The level of detail helps guide precise planning before any procedure begins.
Having this information in advance supports safer and more efficient treatment decisions.
How CBCT Differs from Traditional CT or CAT Scans
Traditional hospital CT scans capture multiple parallel X-ray images from top to bottom.
Small gaps can exist between these images, which are then filled in by computer estimation.
This process often involves higher radiation levels.
CBCT works differently by rotating around the head to capture overlapping images from multiple angles.
That overlap eliminates gaps and creates a more accurate 3D model. Radiation exposure is also lower because it is focused only on the area being examined.

Benefits of Cone Beam 3D Imaging
Detailed imaging allows for better evaluation of bone structure, nerves, and surrounding tissues.
This level of precision helps reduce uncertainty and improves overall treatment planning.
Radiation exposure remains very low, often comparable to a single day of natural background exposure. Lower risk combined with higher accuracy makes CBCT a valuable tool in modern dental care.
