Comfortable, Anxiety-Free Dental Care for Every Patient
Sometimes a tooth cannot be saved. Whether due to severe decay, advanced gum disease, trauma, crowding, or infection, tooth extraction is occasionally the most appropriate treatment to protect your overall oral health. At A-Dental Center in North Hollywood, Dr. Fadi Elzayat, DDS, FICOI performs both simple and surgical tooth extractions in-house with no referrals to external specialists required. Same-day and next-day appointments are available for patients in pain or dealing with a dental emergency.
When is a tooth extraction necessary?
Dr. Elzayat always explores every option to save a natural tooth before recommending extraction.
However, extraction is the right choice when one or more of the following apply.
The tooth has severe decay that has destroyed too much of its structure to be restored with a filling or crown.
The tooth has an infection or abscess that has not responded to or is not suitable for root canal treatment.
Advanced gum disease has caused significant bone loss around the tooth, leaving it loose and non-functional.
The tooth is fractured below the gum line and cannot be restored.
A tooth needs to be removed to make room for orthodontic treatment.
A baby tooth has not fallen out on its own and is blocking the eruption of the permanent tooth.
The tooth is impacted, as is common with wisdom teeth, causing pain, infection, or damage to neighboring teeth.
Simple vs surgical extraction
Simple extraction:
is performed when the tooth is fully visible above the gum line. After numbing the area with local anesthesia, Dr. Elzayat loosens the tooth with a dental instrument called an elevator and removes it with forceps. The procedure typically takes 20 to 40 minutes, and recovery is straightforward.
Surgical extraction:
is required when a tooth is broken below the gum line, has curved or unusually shaped roots, or is partially or fully impacted beneath bone and gum tissue. A small incision is made in the gum, and bone may need to be gently removed to access the tooth. The tooth is often divided into sections for easier removal. The site is cleaned and closed with sutures. Surgical extractions are performed under local anesthesia, and sedation options are available for patients who prefer a more relaxed experience.
Sedation options
Tooth extractions at A-Dental Center can be performed under local anesthesia alone or combined with nitrous oxide or oral sedation for patients who prefer a more comfortable and anxiety-free experience. If dental anxiety has made you put off a necessary extraction, let our team know when booking, and we will arrange the right sedation option for you.
What to expect on the day of your extraction
Before the procedure Dr. Elzayat will review your dental X-rays, confirm the treatment plan, and administer local anesthesia to numb the area completely. You will feel pressure and movement during the procedure but should not feel pain. If at any point you experience discomfort let Dr. Elzayat know immediately.
After the extraction a gauze pad is placed over the socket to help a blood clot form. You will receive written aftercare instructions before leaving the practice.
Recovery and aftercare
Most patients recover from a simple extraction within two to three days. Surgical extractions typically take five to seven days for initial healing, with full tissue recovery over several weeks.
Key aftercare guidelines include biting gently on the gauze for 30 to 45 minutes after the procedure, avoiding straws, smoking, and spitting forcefully for the first 48 hours to protect the blood clot, taking over-the-counter pain relief as recommended, applying an ice pack to the outside of the face in 10-minute intervals for the first 24 hours to reduce swelling, eating soft foods for the first few days, and continuing to brush and floss your other teeth normally while avoiding the extraction site.
The most common complication after extraction is dry socket, which occurs when the blood clot in the socket is dislodged or dissolves before healing is complete. Symptoms include worsening pain two to three days after the procedure and a bad taste or smell from the socket. If you experience these symptoms, call the practice immediately at (818) 593-0700.
Tooth replacement options after extraction
Losing a tooth does not have to be permanent. A-Dental Center offers several options to restore your smile after extraction.
A dental implant is the most natural-feeling and longest-lasting replacement option. A titanium post is placed in the jawbone and topped with a custom crown.
A dental bridge uses neighboring teeth as anchors to support a replacement tooth in the gap.
A partial denture is a removable appliance that fills one or more gaps.
For patients missing most or all of their teeth, All-on-4 provides a full arch of fixed replacement teeth supported by just four implants.
Dr. Elzayat will discuss your replacement options at the time of extraction or at a follow-up consultation so you can make an informed decision at your own pace.
Tooth extraction cost and insurance
The cost of a tooth extraction varies depending on whether the procedure is simple or surgical and whether sedation is used.

FAQ
The procedure is performed under local anesthesia so you will not feel pain during the extraction, only pressure and movement. Most patients are surprised by how straightforward the experience is. Post-procedure soreness is normal and well managed with over-the-counter pain relief. Sedation is available for patients who want additional comfort.
A simple extraction typically takes 20 to 40 minutes from start to finish. Surgical extractions take longer depending on the complexity of the case. Dr. Elzayat will give you a realistic time estimate at your consultation.
If you are having local anesthesia only you can eat normally beforehand. If you are having oral sedation you will be asked to avoid food for several hours before your appointment. Dr. Elzayat’s team will give you specific instructions when your appointment is confirmed.
nitial healing takes two to three days for simple extractions and five to seven days for surgical cases. The gum tissue fully closes over the socket within two to four weeks. Bone healing in the socket takes several months, which is why tooth replacement should ideally be planned within a few months of extraction.
Dry socket occurs when the blood clot that forms in the extraction socket is dislodged or dissolves before healing is complete. To avoid it do not use straws, smoke, or spit forcefully for 48 hours after the procedure. If you experience worsening pain two to three days after your extraction call us immediately at (818) 593-0700.
Dr. Elzayat always prefers to save a natural tooth when possible. A root canal preserves the tooth structure and is generally the preferred option when the tooth can be restored. Extraction is recommended only when the tooth cannot be saved or when keeping it would put neighboring teeth or overall oral health at risk.
In most cases yes. Leaving a gap after extraction can cause neighboring teeth to shift, bone loss in the jaw, bite problems, and changes in facial appearance over time. Dr. Elzayat will discuss your replacement options including dental implants, bridges, and dentures so you can make an informed decision.
