Dr. Elzayat has led A-Dental Center since 2008. A graduate of USC Herman Ostrow School of Dentistry, he supervises every crown case personally from digital impressions and shade matching to final cementation and bite verification. Complex cases involving root canal, post and core, and implant crowns are handled in-house without referral.

What Is a Dental Crown?

A dental crown, also called a cap, is a custom-made tooth-shaped restoration that fits entirely over a prepared tooth, from the gum line up. It restores the tooth's original shape, strength, size, and appearance, protecting it from further damage and allowing normal function.

Crowns are fabricated from digital scans of your prepared tooth. The result is a precision-fit restoration that looks, feels, and functions like a natural tooth, indistinguishable from surrounding teeth in most cases.

Modern crowns are metal-free. Zirconia is the strongest dental ceramic available and the current standard for most crown cases, offering exceptional durability and aesthetics without the gray shadow that metal-containing crowns can develop over time.

At A-Dental Center, all crowns are designed and overseen by Dr. Elzayat personally. Shade matching, margin fit, and bite alignment are verified before final cementation to ensure a result that is both functional and beautiful. A-Dental Center serves patients seeking dental crowns throughout Los Angeles, including North Hollywood, Burbank, Studio City, Glendale, Van Nuys, and the broader San Fernando Valley.

Do I Need a Dental Crown?

A crown is the appropriate restoration when a tooth's remaining structure is insufficient to support a filling, or when the tooth needs protection from further fracture. Here are the most common clinical indications.

💥

Cracked or Broken Tooth

A crack extending into the dentin causes sharp pain on biting and will propagate further without a crown to hold it together. A crown wraps the entire tooth, preventing the crack from extending below the gum line and requiring extraction.

🦷

Large Filling or Repeated Decay

When a filling replaces more than half the tooth structure, the remaining walls become thin and vulnerable to fracture. A crown distributes bite forces evenly across the entire tooth, preventing catastrophic fractures.

🔄

After Root Canal Treatment

Root canal treatment removes the tooth's pulp, leaving it brittle and more susceptible to fracture. Crown placement is nearly always recommended afterward, particularly for molars that bear heavy chewing forces.

😣

Worn or Eroded Teeth

Teeth worn down by bruxism, acid erosion, or age lose height and function. Crown placement restores original dimensions, corrects bite, and protects remaining enamel from further loss.

🔩

Dental Implant Restoration

Implant-supported crowns at A-Dental Center are custom-fabricated to match surrounding teeth in shape, color, and bite relationship.

Cosmetic Correction

Severely discolored or misshapen teeth that cannot be corrected with veneers or bonding may require crowns, particularly when structural correction is needed alongside cosmetic improvement.

The Crown Procedure at A-Dental Center

Five straightforward steps from consultation to final cementation, with a temporary crown protecting your tooth throughout.

01

Examination and Treatment Planning

Dr. Elzayat evaluates the tooth with clinical examination and digital X-rays. Decay and structural damage are assessed. Crown material and shade are selected. All costs are presented transparently before proceeding.

02

Tooth Preparation

Under local anesthesia, the tooth is reduced in size (typically 1.5 to 2mm around the circumference) to create space for the crown. All decay is removed. A post and core buildup is placed if insufficient tooth structure remains.

03

Digital Impression and Temporary Crown

A precise digital scan captures the exact dimensions of the prepared tooth. A temporary crown is cemented immediately so you leave with a protected, functional tooth while the permanent crown is fabricated in the laboratory (typically 1 to 2 weeks).

04

Crown Fitting and Cementation

The permanent crown arrives from the laboratory. Dr. Elzayat verifies fit, margin seal, color match, and bite alignment before cementing. Adjustments are made chairside as needed. The crown is permanently cemented using high-strength dental adhesive.

05

Bite Verification and Care Instructions

Bite registration confirms the crown does not interfere with normal occlusion. Care instructions are reviewed: avoid hard foods, wear a nightguard if you grind, and maintain regular professional cleanings. A-Dental Center monitors every crown at your regular checkups.

Frequently Asked Questions — Dental Crowns
Los Angeles

Cost & Insurance

Zirconia crowns: $1,500–$2,500. eMax: $1,500–$2,200. PFM: $1,200–$1,800. Most PPO plans cover a portion of crown costs (typically 50% after deductible) when clinically indicated. A-Dental Center verifies your specific benefits before your appointment.

Most PPO dental plans cover 50% of crown costs after the annual deductible, up to your annual maximum. Coverage is typically limited to clinically necessary crowns (decay, fracture, after root canal) rather than purely cosmetic crowns. We verify benefits before your visit — no surprise bills.

Yes. CareCredit and Cherry financing are available, often with 0% interest promotional periods. We present all financing options at your consultation.

The Procedure

No. Crown preparation is performed under local anesthesia. Mild sensitivity in the prepared tooth for 1–5 days afterward is common and resolves on its own. Sedation is available for anxious patients.

Typically 2 appointments: the first for preparation and temporary crown, the second (1–2 weeks later) for the permanent crown. Same-day crown options are available for some cases.

Temporary crowns are made of composite resin and are cemented with temporary cement. They protect the prepared tooth while the permanent crown is made. Avoid very sticky or hard foods with a temporary crown, as they can dislodge. If a temporary crown falls off, call us immediately — do not leave the tooth unprotected.

Candidacy

If decay or damage affects less than half the tooth and adequate strong structure remains, a filling is appropriate. If more than half the tooth is compromised, if the tooth is cracked, or if it has had a root canal, a crown is the correct choice. Dr. Elzayat evaluates with X-rays and gives you an honest answer — no overtreatment.

Almost always for back teeth (premolars and molars). Root canal treatment removes the pulp, leaving the tooth brittle and significantly more prone to fracture. A crown encases the entire tooth and prevents fracture — which would require extraction. Front teeth with minimal structure loss may sometimes be restored with a smaller restoration, but Dr. Elzayat recommends a crown in most root canal cases.

A tooth that needs a crown is at high risk of catastrophic fracture — a vertical crack below the gum line that requires extraction. A $1,500 crown today prevents a $3,500–$5,500 implant tomorrow. Once a crown is recommended, prompt placement is strongly in your interest.

After Your Crown

Zirconia: 20–30 years. eMax: 15–20 years. PFM: 15–20 years. Gold: 25–40 years. Lifespan depends on oral hygiene, bite forces, and grinding habits. Regular professional cleanings and a nightguard for grinding patients significantly extend crown life.

Properly cemented crowns rarely fall off. If your crown comes off, call A-Dental Center immediately at (818) 593-0700. Keep the crown. Do not try to re-cement it yourself with superglue. We can usually see you the same day.

Zirconia is the current gold standard for most cases — strongest, most durable, metal-free, and highly aesthetic. eMax is preferred for upper front teeth where translucency is paramount. Gold remains the longevity champion for back molars in heavy grinders. Dr. Elzayat recommends the right material for your specific tooth, bite, and aesthetic goals.
