Comfortable, Anxiety-Free Dental Care for Every Patient

Dental anxiety is one of the most common reasons people avoid the dentist, and one of the most treatable. At A-Dental Center in North Hollywood, Dr. Fadi Elzayat and his team offer sedation options designed to help even the most anxious patients receive the care they need in a calm, comfortable, and judgment-free environment. Whether you are nervous about a routine cleaning or facing a more complex procedure, sedation dentistry can make all the difference.

Who is sedation dentistry for?

  • Sedation dentistry is appropriate for a wide range of patients.
  • You may benefit from sedation if any of the following apply to you.
  • You experience significant anxiety or fear at the thought of dental treatment.
  • You have had a traumatic dental experience in the past.
  • You have a strong gag reflex that makes treatment difficult or uncomfortable.
  • You need multiple procedures completed in a single visit.
  • You have difficulty sitting still for extended periods.
  • You have sensitive teeth or gums that make treatment uncomfortable.
  • You have been avoiding dental care for years and need to catch up on treatment in a manageable way.
  • Dr. Elzayat takes a non-judgmental approach with every patient.
  • If anxiety has kept you from the dentist, you are not alone, and this practice was built around making care accessible to everyone.

Sedation options at A-Dental Center

Nitrous Oxide (Laughing Gas): Nitrous oxide is the most commonly used form of dental sedation. A small mask is placed over your nose, and you breathe in a mixture of nitrous oxide and oxygen throughout the procedure. Within minutes, most patients feel relaxed, calm, and mildly euphoric. You remain fully conscious and able to communicate with Dr. Elzayat at all times. The effects wear off within minutes of removing the mask, meaning you can drive yourself home after the appointment. Nitrous oxide is safe for most adults and children and is ideal for patients with mild to moderate anxiety.

Oral Sedation: Oral sedation involves taking a prescribed sedative medication before your appointment. By the time you arrive at the office, you will feel deeply relaxed and drowsy. You remain conscious and able to respond to instructions but may have little memory of the procedure afterward. Oral sedation is a good option for patients with moderate to severe anxiety or for longer procedures. You will need a responsible adult to drive you home after an oral sedation appointment.

Local Anesthesia: All procedures at A-Dental Center are performed with local anesthesia to ensure you feel no pain at the treatment site. Local anesthesia is used alongside sedation rather than as a replacement for it. Dr. Elzayat takes particular care with anesthetic administration, using a slow and gentle technique to minimize discomfort during injection.

What procedures can be done with sedation?

Sedation is available for virtually any procedure at A-Dental Center, including routine cleanings and exams for highly anxious patients, wisdom teeth removal, dental implant placement, All-on-4 surgery, root canal treatment, tooth extractions, dental crown placement, and multiple procedures completed in a single extended appointment.

If you are unsure whether sedation is right for your planned procedure, mention your anxiety when booking and a team member will discuss your options before your appointment.

Is sedation dentistry safe?

Sedation dentistry is safe when administered by a trained and experienced provider. Dr. Fadi Elzayat, DDS, FICOI, has administered sedation for patients across a wide range of procedures for over 27 years.

Your health history, current medications, and any relevant conditions are reviewed before sedation is recommended.

Patients with certain medical conditions may require clearance from their physician before receiving oral sedation.

Dr. Elzayat will review your complete health history at your consultation and recommend only the options that are appropriate for you.

What to expect at your sedation dentistry appointment

If you are receiving nitrous oxide, no special preparation is required. You may eat and drink normally beforehand and drive yourself home after.

If you are receiving oral sedation, you will be given a prescription for a sedative to take approximately one hour before your appointment. Arrange for a trusted adult to drive you to and from the practice. Avoid eating for several hours before your appointment as directed. Wear comfortable, loose-fitting clothing. Plan to rest at home for the remainder of the day after your appointment.

At the practice, you will be welcomed by our bilingual team, settled comfortably in the dental chair, and monitored throughout your appointment. Dr. Elzayat will not begin treatment until you feel ready.

Sedation Dentistry and Children

Nitrous oxide is commonly used for children who experience anxiety during dental treatment.

A-Dental Center welcomes patients of all ages, and Dr. Elzayat is experienced in making younger patients feel comfortable and at ease. If your child is nervous about dental visits, ask about nitrous oxide at their next appointment.

Cost and insurance

The cost of sedation varies depending on the type used and the length of the procedure. Nitrous oxide is generally an affordable add-on to any appointment.

Oral sedation involves the cost of the prescription medication.

Many PPO dental insurance plans provide partial coverage for sedation when it is clinically indicated.

A-Dental Center will verify your insurance benefits before your appointment so you know exactly what to expect.

Flexible financing is available for any out-of-pocket costs.

FAQ

Is sedation dentistry the same as being put to sleep?

No. The sedation options at A-Dental Center keep you conscious and able to communicate throughout your procedure. You will feel deeply relaxed and calm but you are not unconscious. General anesthesia, which does render patients unconscious, is typically only used in hospital settings for very complex oral surgery.

Will I feel any pain with sedation?

Sedation reduces anxiety and promotes relaxation but is used alongside local anesthesia which numbs the treatment area completely. The combination means you will feel neither pain nor significant anxiety during your procedure.

Can I drive after sedation?

After nitrous oxide you can drive yourself home since the effects wear off within minutes of the mask being removed. After oral sedation you must have a responsible adult drive you home as the effects last several hours.

How do I know which sedation option is right for me?

Dr. Elzayat will discuss your anxiety level, medical history, and the procedure being performed during your consultation to recommend the most appropriate option. There is no one-size-fits-all approach and your comfort is always the priority.

Is sedation dentistry safe for people with medical conditions?

Most patients with common medical conditions can safely receive nitrous oxide. Oral sedation requires a more thorough review of your health history and current medications. Dr. Elzayat will review everything before making a recommendation and may request clearance from your physician if needed.

How much does sedation dentistry cost?

Nitrous oxide is "typically $250–$800 per visit an affordable addition to any procedure. Oral sedation involves a prescription cost. Many PPO plans offer partial coverage. Call (818) 593-0700 for specific pricing or to verify your insurance coverage before your visit.
