Bone grafting is a dental term that may make some people feel uncomfortable. The image of this type of procedure may suggest major work – or major pain. Dr. Elzayat is an experienced dentist with a Doctorate in Dental Surgery. He has performed hundreds of procedures and helped hundreds of patients achieve their healthiest, most attractive smiles. When necessary, bone grafting may be performed to improve the outcome of a customized treatment plan.
This level of treatment may be necessary if a patient has lost one or more teeth, and optimal replacement has not been achieved. In the natural oral structure, our teeth are held in place because they are tethered to the jawbone by their roots. What many people do not realize is that the bone and the teeth are mutually beneficial, each providing necessary support to the other.
When a tooth is lost, the roots are lost as well. In the absence of roots, the jawbone has no stimulation to keep it intact. Gradually, the bone beneath the gums begins to erode. As it progressively shrinks, a hollow forms where a tooth once was.
Why does this matter?
Attempting tooth replacement with a bridge or implant in an area where bone has significantly receded would lead to an unnatural appearance. Placing a dental implant into a deep hollow, for instance, would leave this tooth sitting much lower than others, or would require a too-long dental crown. In either situation, neither form nor function would be ideal.
New teeth are a possibility thanks to bone grafting
The bone grafting procedure addresses lost bone tissue, building up a hollow so that the proper restoration can be placed. Just a few decades ago, people whose bone had recessed significantly would not be considered good candidates for dental implants. Today, bone grafting makes it possible to restore your smile with dental implants if you choose.
