Mature women with healthy smiles live longer, new study says
The Journal of the American Heart Association recently published a study that highlights the mouth-body connection. Researchers analyzed health data of more than fifty-thousand post-menopausal women, over a period of five years. Their findings are enlightening.
  • Those with a history of gum infection (periodontal disease) had a 12 percent higher risk of premature death
  • Those who had experienced the loss of natural teeth had a 17 percent higher risk of premature death
The study authors emphasis that their finding do not mean that dental problems cause death. Instead, it establishes an association between the two conditions. As dentists have been telling their patients for years, a healthy mouth is part of a healthy body.
