Dentist in North Hollywood shares teeth cleaning tips
Regular professional hygiene appointments at A-Dental Center are critical to the vitality of your mouth. Our Registered Dental Hygienist expertly cleans spots behind and between teeth that you cannot reach with home care, helping to keep gum disease and tooth decay at bay. These visits also give our dentists an opportunity to thoroughly examine your mouth for early indications of oral problems. Preventive treatments such as fluoride to strengthen enamel, or sealants to reduce risk of cavities, may be applied for additional protection. Our team only sees you a few times a year, though. Fadi Edmond Elzayat, DDS, better known as Dr. Edmond, shares these tips with Hollywood patients on daily teeth cleaning.
Don’t rush the brush
Most people know that they should brush their teeth in the morning, after meals, and before going to bed. What they tend to forget is to slow down and brush gently but thoroughly. Use a downward sweeping motion on the outside and inside surfaces of upper teeth, and the reverse on the lower arch. This removes plaque from enamel, without pushing food debris under the gum line. Think about cleaning all sides of each individual tooth as you brush. The whole process should take about two minutes. You probably have a stop watch on your mobile phone or fitness tracker – use it.
Floss like a boss
If you skip flossing, you miss cleaning about 30 percent of tooth area. These are spaces where bacteria hide to start eating away at teeth and gums. The idea of flossing is not to see how hard or fast you can ping the string between your teeth. Secure about 18 inches of floss over your index fingers. Pull it into a V-shape around one side of a tooth and gently slide it up and down. Repeat with the other side, and continue until all teeth are flossed. Please don’t forget the furthest surface of back molars. Even though this isn’t an “in between” space, it is easy to miss with brushing.
Cheats for sweets
Sugary beverages, starchy chips, and candy are common between-meal snacks at any age. It is best for your oral health and whole body wellness to substitute pure water, and crunchy fresh fruit and vegetable munchies. Regardless, if you cannot brush right after snacking, swish with fresh water to flush sugar, acids, and food debris from the mouth. Chewing sugar-free gum with xylitol also helps to clean teeth and maintain a non-acidic, balanced pH level in the mouth.
