Bone grafting can rebuild structure allowing Hollywood patients to receive dental implants
Dental implants are an innovative solution for missing teeth that can last the rest of patients’ lives. Their success is based on many factors, one of the most important being sufficient bone structure. Implants are placed into the jawbone, and take the place of natural tooth roots. Because of this, implants must be stabilized in the jawbone. When the density of the bone is compromised (which is often the case after periodontal disease) it can affect the success of the implants. Prior to implants, each patient will be assessed for sufficient bone structure.
In the past, patients without sufficient bone structure would need to turn to alternative solutions for tooth replacement such as dentures. However, advancements in technology have allowed us to reestablish bone structure through grafts.
Bone grafts are performed to stimulate regrowth of healthy tissue. This new bone growth allows the implants greater stability, and improves the chances of longevity. The process can be lengthy, requiring multiple visits over several months. Typically, the material used for the bone graft will come from another area of the mouth. In some cases, synthetic materials may need to be used. The grafting material is placed around the implanted post in areas where there is degeneration of tissue. Once complete, the area is left to heal over the course of several months. In a successful bone graft, healthy tissue will have grown around the implant to give it a stable foundation. In the interim, temporary dental prosthetics are placed for functionality.
Once we have determined the bone graft was a success, we can place the final restoration. Depending on the number of teeth missing, this could be a crown, bridge, or denture. This appointment is relatively quick, as it doesn’t take long to uncover the top of the implant and place the final prosthetic.
